At the tail end of 2012, online security firm McAfee Labs announced that a ring of criminals intended to hack into the accounts of customers with accounts at major American banks. The operation, codenamed Project Blitzkrieg, was rumored to go into effect in the spring of 2013. While the plan appears to have been thwarted, it does highlight the need for caution on the part of anyone doing online banking. For businesses in particular, according to the Cybersource 2012 Online Fraud Report, online fraud, including bank account hacking, cost merchants more than $3.4 billion in 2011, up $700 million from the previous year.
